Alcohol is served twice -
The bar service trolley The second is with the main meal. However you can wander up and ask at any time. Soft drinks you can get at any time as well, they tend to leave a stack of stuff in the galley so you can help yourself. A good crew will come around with juice/water a couple of times. Some flights not at all.

They normally do a couple of drink rounds on every flight but you are more than welcome to ask one of the flight crew for more by either requesting one from your seat or popping to the galley.
One thing to remember is the pressurisation on the aircraft does effect how alcohol reacts with the body so if he's hardly every drinks then he may find himself a bit more "merry" that if he was on the ground -Steve

Thanks both
The affects might be a good thing, I think hes hoping to knock himself out for at least part of the flight. He gets bored on a 2 hour Europe flight so this is going to be an experience for him! Hahaha |

OP. Maybe me but it has stood me in good stead for donkeys years.
On the day flight I wander to the galley at least every hour and have 2 glasses of water. OK it makes for more loo trips but it keeps me hydrated and I feel so much better for it.

I was just scrolling through Twitter and I see that Virgin Atlantic answered your question too. Pasted below... Bob.
@VirginAtlantic: @theDIBB It's great to see you're flying soon with us over a birthday celebration, we look forward to seeing you soon. We have specific times where drinks are served but you can always ask a crew as and when you feel. Hope this helps. twitter/messages/compose...nt_id=20626359

Nice to see an official response on this via Twitter! DH and I like a drink or two (or five) on the flight but we always feel awkward about it - we take it in turns to go up and ask so we don't feel embarrassed I always thought it asw fine to ask but poor DH got really snapped at one year by asking for another drink so we've been wary ever since.

We also got snapped at by Virgin cabin crew coming home from New York this year. After sitting on the runway for 4 hours waiting for take off in bad weather in JFK we were given a teeny tiny cup of water in the whole of that time. Daughter asked politely for a coke and was snapped at and told there was none ! No drinks service in economy all flight except tea/coffee/wine with the meal. That was sat on the plane for 11 hours ! That flight was awful and yet going out the crew couldn’t have been nicer, at least 2 drinks service and champagne as it was our sons 21st on the day.

I think they are a lot more concerned nowadays with the possible problems some people cause by having one/6 too many drinks on flights n quite rightly so. Alcohol dehydrates & on flights particularly long haul flights, as Mr Tom says a glass of water is your best bet, ready for celebrations when you arrive.
