My Mum has often said to me that she finds it really difficult when acquaintances/friends won't accept money for doing odd jobs etc. It makes her feel like she can't ask again as she doesn't want to abuse the offer, whereas if she can pay for a service that's different. She can ask them and have some control of the situation because they are offering her a service and being reimbursed for their time, skill etc.
Hope that makes sense - I know exactly what she means etc - I just hope I've explained it right.
It's completely upto you what you do with the money anyway - as you said you could save it and treat them to things etc

Older people are very proud, and I think they become more so as they lose their independence. If your mum wants you to have the money I think you should take it, and what you do with it is a matter for you but its a lovely idea to put it towards things your parents need to replace over time.

thanks everyone, you have made me feel a better. My mum definitely would not get anyone else in to do it other than family so it wouldn't get done if I didn't do it. I guess that didn't occur to me until other dibbers shared their experiences. thanks again.
