‘Tainted love’ by Soft Cell is even better than the Gloria Jones original. (imho).

‘I say a little prayer’ by Aretha is even better than the Dionne Warwick original.

‘All along the watchtower’ sounds better by Jimi Hendrix than the original by Bob Dylan.

‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash is better than the original by Nine Inch Nails.
I have Metallica version of Whisky in the Jar as my ring tone. Those opening bars make it a perfect choice.

Can't agree about All along the watchtower - no one has ever bettered a Dylan song in my opinion.

My problem with Bob Dylan is that although he wrote some truly, truly great songs, few would call him a great singer. He did mumble rather a lot.

Jimi Hendrix guitar playing on all along the Watchtower is what makes it for me. Many would agree that he is the greatest guitar player that ever lived and this song represented him at his peak. To be fair, he wasn't the greatest singer either.

Bob Dylan writes the best, but others cover them so much better. Also in the same vein, Van Morrison, He murders his own songs, yet other covers are brilliant. Rod Stewart, Downtown Train for one.

Metallica’s Whiskey in the Jar has already been mentioned (twice) But it remains the first that comes to mind for me in terms of a cover better than the original (if you can cal Thin Lizzy’s version original)

I have a copy of a Bruce Dickinson cover of Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath which I prefer to the original.

The final one which comes to mind is Guns and Roses cover of Live and Let Die, which stands out in that unlike the above two the original does nothing for me, but I love the cover.

Erma Franklyn (Aretha’s big sister) did ‘take a piece of my Heart’ pretty well, but Big Brother and the Holding Company took it to a whole new level with Janis Joplin’s incredible, electric vocals.

Others have tried the song since, such as Faith Hill and even Dusty Springfield, but Janis Joplin was just unbeatable for me.
