Happy 40th Birthday to the Metro in Newcastle/Gateshead - the inagural journey took place 40 years ago today but the first public service took place from Tynemouth to Haymarket on 11th August at 5.38am. Oddly it wasn't officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen until November 6th 1981 (and what a kerfuffle it was to travel on using a baby buggy then).
End of todays history lesson.

Today 1939 the twin socialist evils of Communism & Nazism united in the German-USSR non-aggression pact. Two of the worst genocidal murderers in history, Adolf Hitler & Josef Stalin, formed an unholy alliance & within days fell upon Poland & began tearing it apart.

Sorry a day late
Hurricane Andrew had hit Homestead and Florida City on 24th August 1992 and was the most destructive hurricane to ever hit Florida in terms of structures damaged or destroyed, and was the costliest in financial terms until Hurricane Irma 25 years later. 99% of mobile homes in Homestead were destroyed- the damage could be seen for years later. Many of us will have seen the Burger King International HQ which is located just across the road from MIA - the tidal reach there was over 16 foot more than normal. Andrew by 25th August was already in the Gulf of Mexico heading toward Louisiana. We should never underestimate the power of nature. |
