Struggling to get head around

Yes I know I said not going back

Saratoga springs

I really don't understand how renting points works and if it's cost effective rather than going for a normal direct booking

So let's say 9 nights September 2022?

A quick look on David’s for DVC rental has the 1st 9nights at SSR in a studio room for $1938. I’m not sure how that compares to cash value as SSR isn’t showing when you search room only for some reason?

It's usually significantly cheaper to rent points but you don't get any offers Disney have on. And you booking is with whoever you rent points from so usually not as flexible.
We've done it twice (bay lake tower/animal kingdom lodge) and are again next year for boardwalk. We booked direct when we did a week in Feb a few years ago as we got free dining an which made it worth paying more for the room.

This has, been the issue in the past, I like free dining but now that's gone I'm thinking DVC at SSR which is my favourite would be s good option

Remember you also won’t pay for resort parking if staying on DVC points.

Good point
How far out can you book..I'm very undecided about 2022.. very dependent on airfares.. or 3933
