Universal AP and hotel discount

I’m considering buying a Universal AP mainly for hotel discount. If I purchase it online and then book the hotel using the AP discount, it says you have to show the AP at check in.
Would the confirmation email regarding purchase of the AP be enough? Or do you have to physically have it?
Any advice welcome.

As above, all other discounts you actually need to have it as they require a Serial No.
