Car hire excess insurance?

No Florida I know, but not sure where else to ask!

We need to hire a car to go to Scotland in the summer. We will be using AVIS through BA as we have a voucher for car hire from them.

You can purchase the Premium cover from them which is £189, which we don't have enough on the voucher to cover. We would be hiring for 9 days.

Does anyone know if there is a separate stand alone policy we can buy that would cover car hire excess in this country, rather than buying their policy? Or having an add on to our car insurance?

I have no idea as never hired a car in this country before!

Hope i've made sense!

I live in mainland Europe and have an annual policy with Questor but fortunately haven't had to used it yet, so it's difficult to give them a review. When comparing Questor and the competition the issue was that Questor was the only one allowing me to cross a border when there was a negative travel advice in effect for the country I was driving to. So even though others offered coverage for higher value cars I had to choose Questor, as I needed to do cross-border essential travel (which is why I needed to rent cars in the first place). I've had to refuse a free upgrade to a €130k Range Rover because of this, but well, I needed the red zone coverage so that was more important.

I read a few articles on Headforpoints and found a coupon code that way, which took off about 25% I believe. Thinking positive thoughts I got the annual policy so any hires in FL would also be covered for lost keys etc. It was maybe €12 more to get worldwide coverage.

It's important to note that Questor only acts as an agent. The actual policy is underwritten by Lloyd's.

Edited to add: they make it extremely complicated. I signed up for the policy with Questor, the certificate is issued by Riverside, in case of claims I need to contact Orchard, and the policy is underwritten by Lloyd's! This was my only option so I'm not sure how the other companies construct things. But the Lloyd's office on my policy is not far away, so I figured I would go there directly if I ever were to run into any trouble with any of the other parties involved.
