The idea is just to cut down on manual entry and error. If you have a scan of your passport their system will try and read the MRZ data - the bit at the bottom of the photo page with all the >>> marks. It isn't mandatory and you can just enter it all manually. DW said it worked for some of the 4 she did but not all.

Didn't work for any of us so I had to manually enter the details - I thought it was just me been a dunder head
