We stayed at Radio City Apartments in August, we had a 2 bed apt and it was fab. Think it was around £1400 for 6 nights. Location was good too. No pool or gym though. I'm not sure if many hotels have pools in NYC. As for a gym, just walk everywhere you'll soon feel it!

We've just booked Affinia Shelburne for next year, they have lots of suite rooms of different set ups. Somehow by clicking through their suites and treats promo which wasn't available for our dates I found a international rate at a bargain price of less than $200 per night. No pool though.

Not sure the Riu plazza has a pool, but the location is in a fab area, just of times square & about 5 to 10 min walk to ESB, TOTR,you're right on broadway too & there is subway stations on either end of the street. We did so much walking but used the subway a few times to get downtown & back up to times square, we also took a visit to Coney Island which was lovely, it was really hot so we were glad to see a beach! It takes about an hour on the subway from times square.

Downtime on a trip to New York?! I've been a few times and there is so much to see and do. I've been asleep as soon as my head has hit the pillow on our trips.

When we went as a family several years ago we stayed in a family suite at The Hotel Belleclaire. Nice quiet location just off Broadway and we walked everywhere.

We stayed at the Affinia Manhattan in a 2 bedroom suite. The lounge also had a sofa bed.

No pool though. Have a look here:

When we stayed at the Belleclaire in 2008 it was a package with Expedia. It was nearly $2 per pound and we paid £500 per person for direct flight and hotel for 5 nights. I've just checked the hotel price and its MUCH more expensive now.
I think shopping around is the best option; our last holiday was a BA holiday to Las Vegas and I found hotel + flight package was cheapest. The next holiday is a trip to LA and I found it was cheapest to book DIY.
I think it depends what offers are about at the time and whether paying everything upfront matters that you.
