We are staying 3 days at a place called Oakhurst (Yosemite Gateway Inn Best Western) that is about 10 miles out from the entrance of the National Park... I looked at some of the actual hotels/lodges within the Park and they was either pre-booked or the price was way over our budget.

If they still have it, they show a video in the info centre where one bear had worked out that if he made a noise by breaking glass men came and took him away. So when he "did" cars he learned that if he pulled out the rubber seal around the windscreen it would fall inside with very little noise.
As I say bears are nowhere near the valley floor these days so have no fears.
Have to disagree with you there ..we saw 2 bears at the picnic tables just near the start of the walk to the bottom of the falls... amazing sight.

Do they give a saftey lesson, people said on TA that they bring pepper spray! I'd feel cruel using that but then if a bear is charging you!?

Yes I have read reviews regarding the restuarant so we was pre-warned! Sounds a lovely town with plenty of other places.

Hi

I must be a real wuss

I went about 8 years ago and all I can remember is I was absolutely petrified of the drive into the park

It was the first time I realised I was properly afraid of hights (aged 29!) and I couldn't even speak I was so scared...

It didn't help when my DM kept telling me there was nothing to worry about as probably only 1 car a year went over the side

The following day the rest of the party all went off exploring while I stayed at the base and drank coffee all day The only saving grace was they served a really nice French Vanilla coffee which I loved

So, whilst I can appreciate the beauty of the place there is absolutely no chance of getting me in there again
