What happens RE Customs
Never having cruised before, we are doing the WBTA 2018 so stop at Cork, 3 x Canada and then NYC where we will stay for a few nights before flying down to MCO.
At what points do we have to do customs? What happens? Is it a time consuming thing?

Just New York when you disembark. All other ports you don't personally do customs. The ship in theory does clear customs but this is before you are allowed to head off the ship and doesn't mean you need to do anything. You barely notice unless all ashore has a delay.
How long it takes will depend on the queues to be honest and how many people are on the desks. I've not been to NY port yet but I know last year there were long delays when the WBTA came in. The process is the same as at an airport in the US where you queue, go and see an immigration officer and answer some basic questions (what are you doing after the cruise I think I've been asked every time). They stamp your passport then you go through to find your cases and leave.

Thank you, that's really helpful.
Am I correct in assuming we won't have to do it again when we fly from NYC to MCO? It'll just be a straight forward internal flight?

I was on the WBTA I would not say there were long queues.
30 mins max we waited it seems most people had a similar queue. You don't do customs for any other ports, you don't need to take off your passport if you don't want to, but we always do. |

See this is why you should ask for more than one groups opinion as my one group of friends were moaning it took ages! I took this to mean close to an hour but they never specified how long.
