Short city break October half term... Edinburgh?
Looking for a few days city break in Oct half term with our 9 yr old daughter. After our Easter trip (see trip report below) I'm just looking for something fairy cheap and short as I feel bad asking the neighbour to watch the cat again
Has anyone done Edinburgh? Scotland is on my bucket list and the train option seems easier than flying. Anywhere better you could suggest... ? Thank you xx

We went at Christmas a few years ago. Stayed at Edinburgh City (Haymarket) premier inn. It was an easy walk or you could get the tram.
We had a lovely time. We went to the theatre, Harvey nics chocolate bar. We've done the Britannia before which was fascinating. |

Thanks everyone, I had looked at the Novotel (it's got a pool, essential for a 9yr old on 'holiday'!).
Could you give me a sample of what we could do in 2/3 days? I would want to see the greyfriars bobby statue and the castle, what else is there? Free activities and outdoorsy is our favourite, but happy to pay to do something unique/history etc

We have done the castle, Mary Kings Close, Camera Obscura and the zoo. Would thoroughly recommend them all. Try and do the zoo on a calm day as goes quite high up with cold winds. Had a quick look in the National Museum and that looks great too for a 9 year old. The only free one is the museum although you can wander up to the castle and enjoy the views without going in. Also nice just to sit in Princes Gardens (free) with a coffee or picnic. The castle overlooks this. Train a good option as goes into central Edinburgh or Haymarket which is only a mile apart if staying near there. Airport also not far with tram taking you into centre. Theatres always have big shows on. Loads to do. Sorry about book Enjoy Edinburgh.

On our recent trip we enjoyed the National Museum of Scotland, camera obscura and Britannia (didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did but highly recommend!) Also, lots of streets around Edinburgh were inspiration for settings in the Harry Potter books, a wee Google will tell you more! Lovely city, so much to do

Just to add also, we've stayed in the premier in by the water in Leith and found it to be an ideal Base. Nice cafes and restaurants nearby, an area full of character with excellent transport links to the city centre.
