Two days/stop offs left to plan.
Plan so far
Flying into SF, picking up hire car at the end of our SF stay. 3 nights SF staying at the Zephyr (booked) 2 nights to stay on the PCH 2 nights LA staying at Days Inn by Wyndham near Universal (booked) 3 nights Anaheim staying at Best Western Plus Stovall’s Inn (booked) 4 nights Vegas staying at the Bally’s Flying home from Vegas Not done West Coast before so struggling with planning, I can plan Florida with my eyes shut! 😀 So it’s the 2 days driving from SF to LA I’m struggling with.

2 days doesn't give you much time to see the sights on the PCH. There are a lot of stops you could make and so much to see!
I guess if that is the time you should maybe plan a stop in Monterey (easy to spend a day here - you can go whale watching from Moss Landing if you can find time!), make sure you do 17 Mile Drive round coast at Carmel. Second stop maybe Morro Bay? Not sure if you will have time to divert to Hearst Castle as there are plenty of stops you could make along Big Sur etc. Don't miss the Elephant Seal colony just south of San Simeon, and Santa Barbara is worth a stop and wander on the pier when you hit the coast again for the run in to LA through Malibu! Again time may be tight but if you can fit it in at the start Santa Cruz boardwalk between SF and Monterey is great (well I loved it! - If you know the film The Lost Boys, that was where they filmed it. Proper traditional Boardwalk amusement park - I love Disney/Universal too but this was a great contrast, if you only do one ride make it the old wooden coaster!) Edited at 12:14 PM. |

Monterrey/Carmel and somewhere around Morro Bay would be the best areas to stop. Some like Piano beach but we didn't find it as nice as Morro Bay.

We loved Solvang, a small Danish community. Good food, nice shops and a Mission church if you like a bit of history...

Hi agree with the other comments but would steal a day from your LA or vegas area and add to Monterey 2 n and then as others have said morro bay or Santa Barbara . In Monterey definately whale watching,17 mile drive, aquarium,Carmel and possblbly lunch at pebble beach.

I’d recommend Monterey for the Aquarium & San Luis Obispo for Hearst Castle.

Our stops were Monterey and then went inland to Solvang on the way to LA because of the PCH being closed in parts. That was August 2017.

Thank you all, we're going to stay over in Monterey and San Luis Obispo. Going to have a look at booking hotels tomorrow night.

Highly recommend Monterey Plaza hotel and Spa. Lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the sea life.

We loved Monterey spent 2 nights there but would have liked longer. You will have a fantastic holiday.
