DD has been out a lot, sometimes with her flat and sometimes with her course so I can’t say she’s not trying. She says she just feels that she can’t imagine being away for three years.

She has seen a student advisor and is going to apply to transfer closer to home for her second year. It doesn’t commit her to anything but at least it gives her options.
Kate is also looking to transfer closer to home next year, she is too far away to come home on a weekend.
This thread has given me so much comfort in the last few weeks. I know I’m not alone!

It really does help to come here to share our worries. I never thought DD would be homesick but it just shows that you never know.

This is definitely a fear for Georgia, she always takes a while to form friendships. She is starting to make friends from quite a few groups in uni now, her course, her societies and current flatmates. However I’m not sure she is entirely sure enough of the friendships to commit to sharing with them next year yet.

I think your daughter has handled her situation very maturely. She is struggling with homesickness, but is working on practical ways to overcome this. She goes out socialising, is making friends and is working hard on her course. She is also being sensible in finding practical ways to deal with this for her second year.

I do hope it works out well for her, whether that means her starting to feel less homesick or transferring or commuting next year. You should be so proud of her as she seems to be doing all she can to work it out. The homesickness is difficult though, Georgia says that it still gets to her some mornings, like a wave of sadness she can’t push away 😔

I love how supportive this thread has been for us all too, I know it’s helped me a great deal.

Georgia says she loves Bristol and is so pleased she chose a uni close to home. She doesn’t think she would have got through the first few weeks without the visit home and our visit to see her. She is also pleased that she can pop home without having to make too many plans or too much effort. I definitely think a transfer closer to home, if possible, could help any student who is struggling with homesickness. They can still live away from home and gain independence, but the regular visits home help their mental health

I am sorry that homesickness is still an issue for some - I think all our teenagers are dealing with things exceptionally well.

We told DS this morning that unfortunately DH can’t come to HK - his mum is in hospital and he needs to be here for her. It was a difficult decision to make but the right one. DS understood why - if anything were to happen whilst in HK it would be awful for DH to be so far away.

The sad thing is, Kate isn’t homesick she’s lonely. She wants more friends but hasn’t found it as easy as she thought it would be. She has made a few and that is a great start but she likes to be busy all the time! That’s why she loved camp this summer because she was never alone
If she transfers to Cardiff then she’ll have more things to do and she’ll be 40 mins away if she’s lonely!

Thank you - I think she will still be in hospital for another 4 weeks at least
