As per insurance-many states mandate insurance for everyone. Some do not. An uber driver would be really stupid to not be insured as US medical costs are high. Even an ER visit can easily run over $1000.

Given that both Uber and Lyft have rules about your car, I cannot imagine they don't require insurance and if a car has a lien (loan) the bank will usually require insurance.

I would recommend Lyft as we have used them over the last couple of weeks. Great service and cheaper than Uber!

as we are going to NY first, surely JFK to Hells kitchen isnt going to be free ? ? ?
The rides aren't free as such, the code is usually for 20 or 30 dollars off a ride. If your ride is cheaper then you lose the rest of the credit - if it's more you pay the difference on your credit card

You will need two cars as even the UberXL won't fit 5 people and luggage - you may conceivably need two uberXL depending on exactly how much luggage you have

My only concerns are whether the drivers are insured in USA as our driver told us that anyone could be an uber driver and it isn't as strict over there.
It's essentially the same claptrap rubbish that cabbies spout over here to try to protect their over-priced monopoly on taxi services.

They are upset that someone has finally called them out for charging too much and being pretty sub-standard for years. Now they are having to learn customer service skills whilst also having their income hacked at because uber is much better at pricing and keeping the customer happy.
