Thanks for your thoughts guys and gals.
Still really unsure that the full trip covering sf,la,lv, Yosemite, pch and gc will not end up feeling like a long distance courier. And I don't want to spend 8k or whatever doing that. And you talk about the kids moaning, have you ever met the wife Even the 150 miles a day tootling about sounds like a heck of a lot to me, when I know the wife won't be doing any. Yet it is me that wants to go more than anyone. Am I. Mad planning to do the drive to Grand Canyon south and stopping 2 nights ? Just think anything other will really add to the trip costs , and may feel like a cop out where you don't get time to experience the "real" grad canyon |

That is a long drive to the South Rim... but if you're staying for 2 nights, it's an 'acceptable' indulgence, I think.
I do understand how you feel about the driving - it is intimidating. But some parts of the drive are classic secenery - genuinely the stuff you see in movies, that kind of stuff. You may only get the chance once... internal flights can be bought pretty cheaply so that is an option for parts of the trip. One final thought - I know alot of the posts are saying basically to forget LA. I must admit, if I never go back, it wouldn't worry me either. But... for a first timer to do a West Coast tour and not spend at least a night or two in Los Angeles is - to be honest- a bit absurd in my eyes! Yes - it does lack a central focus. Yes - it is huge. Yes - the traffic can be a challenge (but it's nothing compared to the south circular in Londonm trust me!). But it is simply a place you must do, at least once. If you don't go back - and it may not be your cup of tea, who knows- you would look back and regret not being able to say "Oh yeah, LA is a waste of space..", you really would. And your friends and family would look at you, with a quizzical expression on their face, and you KNOW they'd be thinking "Right - flew 5000 miles. Went to San Francisco, drove/flew past Los Angeles to get to San Diego... and didn't actually visit LA? Weird... "
