Car Insurance

Hi,

I am thinking of taking the free car and then getting separate insurance as it seems to work out a lot cheaper.

Has anyone done it this way?

Can anyone recommend the best insurance company to do it this way?

Thanks 😊

A free car? More details required please. Dates, who is it with?

I've seen maybe a handful of Dibbers say they do this during my 17 years on here. I never have but I guess it might work for some.

Don't forget though if you don't take the CDW offered by car hire through UK brokers then if you have a minor shunt the car hire company will put a substantial hold on your CC as you may be deemed at fault initially until the respective insurers argue the responsibility. Not sure how long that would take.

Also a Dibber came on here about a year ago linking the independent policy that he took out and it took a 5 minute search to find that it excluded SLI.

Not for me I'm afraid but there may be some Dibbers who can advise. From your research how much is a separate policy to get $1m SLI and CDW with no excess?

This is the policy that I have looked at and it listed this as whats included for £125

What's included
Below is a summary of the key features and benefits of our car hire excess policy.

For full details, please see the policy wording
  • The excess on damage and theft up to a maximum of £6,500 cover in total, per year
  • Drivers aged between 21 and 85 inclusive
  • Cover for up to seven additional drivers (so long as they’re named in your rental agreement) There is no need to add them to your insurance4carhire policy.
  • Rental periods of up to 60 consecutive days
  • Collision Damage Waiver: up to $125,000, or the value of the rental vehicle or the value of the claim (whichever is the less)
  • Supplemental Liability Insurance: up to $1 million. However, in the US, you’re covered up to $250K if the state law deems this policy to provide primary liability coverage
  • Cover for your courtesy car (the vehicle loaned to you while your rental car is being repaired), or if your own car is in the garage and you’re given a courtesy car).

I don't want to be paying for something that would be worthless in the event of an accident.

I've never done an independent insurance after hiring a car on all our 37 visits and I'm far from being an expert but if it works for you? If I have a prang in my Alamo car I just ring them up and they bring me a replacement straight away. No hold on CC and no debates with insurance companies. I prefer that to be honest.

Are you still considering hiring from Discover Cars that you posted about earlier this month and taking separate insurance?

Sorry I can't advise personally but you may get replies from Dibbers who have done it. Does it save you £125 on the hire?

Mick

No definitely not looking at discover cars, we have the free car included with Virgin but looking at the small print, if we dont take Virgin's fully inclusive insurance then we have to pay the taxes and fees

I've managed to get Virgin down to £244 for 2 weeks with the fully inclusive insurance which I am pretty happy with. :-) Thank you all

PS

Don't forget that you can check in online with Alamo and avoid going anywhere near the terminal desk. Then go to either garage A or B (at MCO) and pick your own car.

Thanks Mick, do you have to wait a certain amount of time after it has been booked? I keep getting an error on the Alamo page when I put my details in
