Caster Sugar

I cannot find any caster sugar in any of the shops. Is there a shortage? I don’t usually need this but like many others have decided to try a bit of baking but so many recipes require caster sugar but over the weeks I have been in Tesco Asda Aldi and small Coop but none. Is there an alternative. I am a complete novice when it comes to baking.

You can put ordinary sugar in a blender if memory serves me right.

You can use granulated, or find a recipe that uses any of the brown sugars, or even use sugar cubes if you have a food processor.

Blend in short bursts or you will end up with icing sugar.

Most own brand granulated sugars and close to being caster sugar these days - I use Tesco. My Mum was a prolific baker and never used caster sugar and I bake quite a bit and only use it from time to time if I have remembered to pick it up when shopping.

I have been making my own caster sugar , put granulated sugar in tall jug and use hand blender and it will gradually turn to caster sugar, and can even make icing sugar if you carry on using the blender but find it better if you use a small amount of granulated sugar at a time.

Yes you are correct but don’t go too far or you end up with icing sugar. Have also been doing this as have had trouble getting caster sugar.
