DS diabetes - update
Hi everyone
As everyone was so helpful and supportive last year when DS was having major issues controlling his type 1 diabetes I thought I should give a bit of an update. Unfortunately no matter how hard I tried or how much I did DS still failed to control his illness, he ended up being admitted to a MH unit in september 2018 following another serious episode of DKA. He almost died again and his kidneys started failing this time. He has since been diagnosed with depression and Personality Disorder (which I always suspected) In October, I think due to stress, I made a serious medication error at work, I ended up having an emotional breakdown which resulted in me having 2 months off work with anxiety and depression. I have been receiving counselling and have now reduced my hours at work. DS has spent 5 months in a MH unit and then a recovery unit where he has received intensive support and psychological help. He has decided to leave college and is now claiming benefits. He has been discharged this week and is going to live with his Dad. Unfortunately due to my own ill health and the effect all of this has had on my other two children we had to make this decision. One of my DS has GCSE’s over the next 18 months and my other DS is starting high school this year so I really need to be there for them. I am obviously still seeing DS, he comes round every couple of weeks to see us and have tea etc, but I have had to completely back off from everything else, I just can’t manage any more stress with it all, it’s nice to just be a Mum again to be honest. I am feeling much more positive about this year, I’m hoping the change of scenery will help to motivate DS, and I am getting back into work and educating my hours means I’m not taking on too much stress. We are doing something together as a family once a month and are starting to rebuild our relationships with each other as a family unit again. Once again, thank you all for your help, support and advice last year. It was honestly one of the most difficult and awful times we have ever been through as a family but hopefully now there is some light at the end of the tunnel for us. |

Having a type 1 child myself I feel huge pain for what you and your DS went through and continue to battle against. I hope everything continues to improve one day at a time. X

I think you have made the right decision for everyone involved.
No matter how much we love our kids we do have a right to protect our own mental and physical health. I hope your 2019 is a better year. xxx |
