How long to allow in JFK for change of plane with Delta?
Looking at LHR to FFL. The connection is 2 hours 20 mins is this enough, it’s the same terminal at JFK.

Assume that's a typo and you mean FLL. It should be ok, though be aware that it's not necessarily the same terminal. International flights will arrive to T4, but the domestic can depart from either T4 or T2. The gate is usually announced 24 hours before the flight, but gate/terminal can still change after that, so check the monitors when you reach JFK.
Either way, after immigration and collecting any checked bags, clear customs (dropping the checked bags just after customs at the Delta counter for the onward flight), then reclear security in T4 regardless of which terminal the FLL flight departs from. If it's T2, you can transfer airside from T4 on the Delta bus. |

Sorry yes it was a typo. Isn’t the luggage checked all the way through to Fort Lauderdale, like luggage is checked all the way through on the return journey? The flight info says the flight arrives at JFK T4 and the Fort Lauderdale one departs from T4.

No, you have to clear customs and immigration at your first point of entry into the US.

As above you clear Immigration, collect your bags, hand over the Customs form if still given one on the plane. Then you just bag drop which is usually close by - you just need boarding cards and they scan the card and the bag. Then you do Security again.
It's on the return flight from US that you don't have to collect bags at layover, they are booked direct to final airport. We have 4 hrs at JFK, anything less we would hate. In the summer at Ny Newark it took 2 hrs for Immigration, Customs and bag drop then security, massive queue then we wanted to eat as was arriving late into Tampa. Maybe had a spare hour but they kept changing our gate due to bad weather and planes not being on the right stand. I wouldn't do less than 3 hours, all you need is your 1st flight to be late leaving UK ... Edited at 12:32 PM. |

Just to be clear about the luggage, it will be tagged to FLL at bag drop in LHR, but as mentioned above by me and others, due to US customs rules you will have to claim the bags and clear customs at your first point of entry, JFK. You don't go through a full check-in again (since they are already checked in and tagged), just drop them off after customs. If I recall correctly, the Delta drop off desk if to the left as you exit customs in T4, there are usually Delta or airport staff around to guide you.
Regarding the terminal info, I'm sure that is correct as it stands, but you should be aware that it can change, Delta moves things around according to operational need. Yesterday, 3 of the 4 FLL flights went from T2, today all of them are scheduled to go from T2, but that could change. Always best to double-check on the day (you still drop your bags in T4 regardless, and as I mentioned, would recommend reclearing security in T4 regardless). |

We are flying that route with Virgin/Delta to FLL but have 4 hours to clear immigration, collect bags, do customs, drop bags, clear security at JFK: we depart at 9am and arrive around 6.45pm. We booked on the Delta site as the Virgin site didn't have the long layover as an option.

We’ve flown into jfk twice and been out of the airport waiting for a cab in 45 mins both times, obviously you’ll need to go back through security but it’s doable and I’d prefer 2 hrs 20 over the 4 hrs 15 we’ve got for next year. Immigration kiosks have always been quick for us. Bear in mind that even though it says they’re both terminal 4 your onward flight could depart from t2 instead so check the app when you land, but there’s a bus which takes you between the 2 (we had this one year on our return flight).

And last month it took me 90 minutes plus to get through immigration. No kiosks working and only two officers processing the queue, until the US and Global Entry passengers were through and then we could go through those booths too until the next flight arrived.
That's unless you were David Cameron, who was whizzed through in a minute and a half. |
