Today’s terribly important question... Coal

Who had one of these, round the back?

I don’t have a concrete one but we have a steel one now, nothing like a roaring fire when it’s cold outside

When I was a child we lived in a terraced Courtaulds house which had an outside loo and a coal house which was a good size.
I can remember it never being less than half full.
When we went over to gas it was used for storage.

I was brought up in a Terraced House and the rear part of the house had an outside loo, a shed and a coal house.

I remember my Dad always bought the coal in the Summer as it was slightly cheaper then than the Winter prices.

The delivery Guys wore leather type sleeveless jackets and were absolutely black from the dust!

Where I lived when someone died the Coal man would come back and remove the coal but only pay half the price as he had to shovel it back out, bag it and weigh it.Then he re sold it.

This is a photo I’ve found online it’s not the house I lived in but it’s exactly the same.
The first door is the outside loo and the second door is what would’ve been used as the coal house

We had gas fires when I was a kid but my mother had lived in a 2 up 2 down so when I went to my grandmothers she had the coal fire going, outside toilet etc.
This was in the 1970s until there was some smoke legislation and she had to replace with a fire. She also got in inside toilet done.

It was an art form to set the fire with newspaper, kindling and coal.

You knew it had failed when the newspaper was drawn in and caught fire!

The one I have is similar to this

Didn’t have a fire growing up, love having one when it’s cold now. Always use firelighters though, have never managed the knack of doing it with rolled up newspapers 😄
