This person was British and hopefully wasn't a Dibber

Tourist don't realise that these staff members need their tips to live on and our friend was very upset.

Let's say when we go in on Friday our last morning we will be giving her a good tip and making sure it is placed in her hand and not left on the table for someone else to steal.

Melvin and Lesley
If she saw this happen, then surely she could have shouted or made some form of protest against this? If she didn't see it happen, how can she accuse someone of it?

Just a thought.

Also, if people didn't tip we wouldn't have this potential issue

Also, "people who work hard to bring you your food" makes me cringe.

I've been a server here and in the USA. It is tiring but it sure as hell isn't as tiring or demanding as most other jobs and this is from someone who used to be a server in Orlando.

I would say this "ALL AMERICANS TIP" is a myth perpetuated in tourist places. I was making a decent wage (not brilliant but comparable I imagine with someone in the UK who works at Poundland or somewhere,) and that was before tips...

2. Why should I tip?
Each of the 50 states has a different minimum wage, usually around eight dollars an hour. But under federal law, the minimum wage for tipped employees like bartenders and waitresses is just $2.13 per hour. Your generous tips will help make up for their low pay.

9. What’s likely to happen if I don’t tip?
This depends. Explain to the manager why you’re not tipping and, so long as your reason is their poor service and not your moral objection to tipping, you’ll probably get a gracious response. They may even take money off your bill. If, however, you skulk off without tipping, don’t be surprised if wait staff chase after you and demand an explanation.≈≈

10. When shouldn’t I tip?
If the service is bad, you should never feel obliged to pay extra. But if you’re not brave enough to withhold the entire tip and trash your waiter to his superior, leaving 10 percent is code for, “The service was awful.”

I don't expect any of us would work for $2.13 per hour - with or without tips...

Its not whether we think its right or wrong, its the done thing. If it disgusts you that much, don't go to countries where this is the norm...
Again i would like to point out that i do tip i just only tip when i feel its worth tipping.

didn't say you didn't, its not a witch hunt - we are all entitled to our views and opinions and should all express them and on occasions agree to disagree

and in the interests of fairness - item 1) in that article said:

1. Am I legally required to tip anywhere in the U.S.?
No. Service charge is always voluntary, even when it’s added to your bill. But if you deduct gratuity from the check, don’t expect it to go down well.

although its personal views, its not personal - I don't understand how people, unless they are physically working in this situation, get so heated - so many tipping threads get banned and closed.

To me its just like discussing and esta or driving on the right side of the road - its one of the things you do in America.

It's precisely because tipping is perceived to be mandatory and complex that it no longer provides a sufficient incentive for good service.

Picklepuppy's commentary is speaking to that exact point.

More contentious I'm sure is the argument that the money was stolen for more or less the same reasons.

I tip, always, and I wouldn't steal the money either, but that doesn't change the reality of the bigger picture.

I agree with everything Papamouse is saying. It's an adjustment, but my view is this.

It's America, make your peace with tipping. If you don't want to tip just go to a counter service. We downgraded from full DDP this year because when we worked out the 14 tips we were into hundreds!

it's a significant chunk of the holiday.

I steal, but then us that money for my tips - everybody wins!

I maintain still it should be called Nigel tho... to avoid confusion,

unless you are travelling with Nigel, in which case "ive left nigel on the table" and "someones nicked Nigel" would be confusing.

The tipping situation is counter productive though, like a lot of US culture and policy. It's ideological rather than rational.

So knock yourself out stiff your server who could well be struggling to make ends meet, and works very hard to serve your meal. Think you will find you are in the tiny minority, most do think it is unacceptable not to tip because you don't feel like it

It is not correct that US workers who get tips don't get paid a fair wage. That's simply incorrect. It IS true they are taxed on an expected amount of tips, not the tips they actually get, which works in their FAVOUR. So don't worry too much about these "poor workers". They do just fine, and I'm guessing if you asked most of them they'd say they'd rather work a tipping job than a straight wage job.
