My son has asked for a pair of these for his birthday but I’m not sure whether to pay the extra for the ones with a wireless charging case. If I do go for these does this mean I’ll have to buy a charging mat too? Also, what is the advantage of having wireless charging, surely the mat has to be plugged in to charge in the first place?
As you can probably guess I’m clueless when it comes to technology 🙈

My kids bought them in Florida last year and both got the wired charging ones. My son now wishes he had bought the wireless charging ones as he already has a wireless charging mat. My daughter isn't bothered.

I have the charging case ,it’s been so handy and charges them really quickly. I plug the case in next to my bed as already have a cable there for my phone

I have airpods/airpods pro with the wireless charging case. Before I bought them, I already had a charging mat that I used to charge my iPhone.

Love having the wireless charging case. I basically just drop my airpods (in case) onto the charging mat to charge, without having to grab the lightning cable and plug it into the case. Admittedly it is not difficult to plug the lightning cable into the case, but somehow I find it very liberating to not need to do this!

The wireless charging case does also have a lightning port so they can still be charged up using a lightning cable if need be.

The question then becomes whether the added cost of having the wireless charging case is worth the convenience it then brings...

I'll add one more thing - Apple usually has extremely good return policies, so it might be worth checking out if they would let you return and buy the alternative wireless/non-wireless option if your son wants the other one?

DH has the new ones but we had charging mats anyway for our phones. He mainly wanted them as they were noise cancelling.

DS's ones aren't wireless charging and he's been very happy with them. I still think they look odd!

Does this mean the wired charging case ones are not noise cancelling? If so then I’d definitely buy the wireless charging ones 😊

The new AirPod pros come with a wireless charging case and are noise cancelling. The cheaper original ones are not noise cancelling but I think you can pay extra to get the wireless charging case which I didn’t realise. So if you were looking at the original ones that come with or without the charging case depending how much you pay then they won’t be noise cancelling.
