VA reward flights thinking of changing
We are booked to go in August at the moment on reward flights with VA. Due to everything going on and only 50/50 feeling like we may get there we are seriously thinking about cancelling and rebooking for August 22 when we can. Am I correct in thinking we would get all our points back and just loose £30 per person?
Also if we held onto the points to perhaps boost them when they next had a deal on, if we cancel after that do we still get to keep the miles we've boosted? As could really use them for the year after as mum and dad have said they may come with us

We have had exactly the same thought process for 4 x UC LHR SFO, 3 x PE rewards for Aug 21.
We cancelled and received all miles back, vouchers and a full refund of taxes. They stated a £30pp cancellation fee, but actually ended up refunding slightly more than we paid for some reason, and the fee was not deducted. We had boosted miles for our Aug 20 MCO trip. We moved that to an open ticket (later rebooked to SFO, then cancelled), and the boosted miles were added to our account even though the flight was effectively cancelled by us, and never happened anyway. We are rebooking for Aug 22. Hopefully with VA, and hopefully at BCV. Edited at 10:13 AM. |

I was really hoping to boost the flights to get some miles first - do you think I would be better keeping hold of them for now to see if an offer comes on before cancelling the flights. - we are DVC and have a booking a SSR so also hoping to be able to bank the points. Mum and Dad have mentioned they may come with us if we move to next year hence why wanting to boost the points. It will definitely be Dad's last time (if he makes it) so would like to put them in premium or upper class if possible.

If there's an offer it'll probably apply to buying miles as well so would still be an option, albeit not as good value.
I guess it comes down to risk. I consider our 800k Virgin points at risk due to the pandemic and wouldn't want to spend to add to that points pot for future bookings in 2022 as it stands. While the points may retain some value if VA go under, there is unlikely to be the same value -only so much wine you can get with points Same for the taxes refund. How easy will it be to get your money back if VA go under before you fly or cancel? For us it would have been next to impossible via Section 75, as the booking was split over 15 different transactions, including some partial refunds, so working it out for a Virgin Atlantic credit card claim probably wouldn't have happened. We wanted to get the cash back and then make a 'clean' booking when things change and the picture is clearer. If they are points from 2021 UY then shouldn't be an issue to bank for your 2022 booking? We're going to have to bank and borrow for 1 x 2 bedroom, and 1 x 1 bedroom for 14 nights at BCV. SSR is Plan B Edited at 11:08 AM. |
