Mobile phone covers - why do we need them?

I have what my daughter calls an old lady case on mine "pleather" folds round the phone like a book cover... with card slots and a money pocket. The case folds to let me watch stuff without a stand or getting hand cramp.

My case is about as important as the phone to be honest.

I agree why not just make them in the non breakable stuff !

I do too, wallet and phone case combined, makes much more sense to me than carrying two things .

I’ve got a rubbery case which makes it much easier for me to hold. It cost me £2.99 from eBay and it’s Minnie Mouse shaped so the ears are also a nice support and again easier to hold / use.

I don't disagree. My point is that companies sell phones for four figures nowadays at the top end. As soon as we get it we have to stick a screen protector on it in order than the real screen isn't damaged.

Why on earth given the cost can't the companies come up with a screen that doesn't need the protector?

Oh I bet they can do that but why would they?
People still buy the phones without and then they charge mega bucks to fix them.

wallet case and sacrificial screen protector always. only last year did i give my galaxy note 3 away after 5 years of service, it was in pristine condition apart from gungy fluff on the grills...

I used to always have a case on my phone but this one and the last one I haven’t. I use the apple upgrade scheme which comes with AppleCare so it means it wont cost me as much if I do smash it. I have a couple of scratches on it but nothing too bad and have dropped it a few times. I found that cases were making the phone bulkier and I dropped it more when it had the case on, but because of how often I dropped it I felt like i needed a case on it to protect it.

I have a clear otter box cover with sparkles, it looks gorgeous as I can still see it’s red (and sparkly)
It’s brand new underneath despite being two years old next month.
I think it’s much easier to pick the phone up with a cover on.
