Community Care Worker
Hi all
I have been working with children for the past 13 years and am currently working in a SEN secondary school. Whilst I love my job it is definitely the caring side I prefer the most rather than the teaching. This has led me to consider a change of career and work with the elderly. I have applied for the position of Community Care Worker and have just been invited for an interview next Thursday. Just wondering if anyone else is currently in or has worked in this type of role that could give me the highs and lows. I will be honest and say that I haven't heard great things which is putting me off slightly and I guess I haven't fully convinced myself yet to step away from my comfort blanket of working with children. Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks |

I’m a community carer, there’s a few of us on here.
I’m just going back out to it now so will reply properly later but I absolutely love it! I’ve been doing it for almost 11 years so it’s not all bad 😄 Edit- What are the not so great things you’ve heard? Is it about the job itself or how companies are run? The biggest change for you may be the hours you’ll have to work. Shifts are generally 7am-2pm and 4pm-10pm and also 365 days of the year. You may have taken that in to account but you’d be surprised by how many are shocked that people still need care on bank holidays/Christmas etc! Good things for me are - - The clients and building relationships - Every day is different - Not being in an office - A fair amount of flexibility Bad points - - The money could be better (though I’m fortunate to work for a great company who pay better than others around here) Other things that could be seen as bad but I don’t mind - Working over Christmas etc - Driving - Being out in all weathers The main downside is obviously when clients pass away. However you find ways to deal with this and it’s always nice to know they were well looked after at the end. Do you know with the job you’ve gone for whether you’ll be working alone or on doubles shifts? Edited at 10:06 AM. |
