You don't have to book them in advance. Its optional.

However, prebooking a fastpass for a popular ride can save an hour (or more) waiting in line when you are there. See the following guidebook page about the new Fastpass+ system:

Without reading everyone else's comments so not agreeing or disagreeing with anybody I have been going to Florida since 2000, prior to that I was a baby when my parents used to take me.

Personally, and apart from the obvious changed in rides, scenery, updates, areas etc I have seen and can feel the change in the park's atmospheres from when Michael Eisner used to own Disney to now Bob Iger does. I can't explain the difference but I honestly feel a shift in atmosphere.

I would still never go anywhere else on holiday and it may be because I don't find the USA so 'foreign' anymore but I yearn for the times between 2000-2005 and how the parks used to be. I really don't know why.

Just read somebody put that it now feels more commercial - what a good way to describe it and I completely agree.

Also don't worry about comparing DLP to WDW other than they're Disney they feel and are handled completely differently. DLP is a nice holiday or break away (all be it extremely expensive) but it really is the little sister of Disney whereas WDW is the Big Momma!
