Travel Insurance Query

Hi,

Could anyone remind me of the amount of medical cover we would need for America please?

Also, both my daughters will be adults when we go and one of them is also taking her boyfriend. Is it better to include him on our policy if that is possible or should he have his own separate insurance?

Thanks

We are maybe not typical travellers being over 70 and both post-cancer but we always go for £10m. Younger and fitter may go for £5m but don't forget that a single night in an American hospital might set you back over £2k

You need to check the small print though on what constitutes a "family" as I doubt that a boyfriend would qualify. Best he gets his own I think.

We never go with less than £5M and preferably £10M. If you are all going as one party then you need something that gives you that cover if you can otherwise you may find difficulties if somebody has to cancel.

Another vote for £10m. It may seem huge but I personally handled US travel claims in excess of £500k and that was over 25 yrs ago so the costs there can be massive. Not all incidents enable the ill or injured person to be brought back to UK quickly so bills can mount up. given what you are likely to spend on the overall holiday, going for a £10m cover versus a smaller Sum Insured is money well spent.
If your daughters are over 18 then some family policies won't apply as they relate to children 18 and under. look for Group policy option if your daughters boyfriend is travelling. Aim to take cover out asap if you have already committed to some costs as that will mean cancellation cover starts straight away.

Certainly agree with getting insurance soon.

Two basic rules in my holiday planning. ESTA before you commit any serious money. Travel insurance as soon as you commit serious money.
