Seriously though, thanks. It's been, erm, enlightening. I'll take 90% of the advice here and stick with good old coffee. I agree with the bitterness of Starbucks coffee, so I'll try and avoid as usual.

Or maybe I could ask for tea? Best not go there...
Definitely don't order the tea unless you are somewhere that specialises in it. It is usually pretty awful as they serve the tea bag on the side and the water isn't hot enough. In the South if you don't specify "hot tea" you might well get ice tea.

Yeah, if you ask for coffee you'll generally get good old filter coffee - like you would've done 20+ years ago before all these places selling lattemochachinos appeared.

If they ask if you want milk and you don't, then just say "No thank you". Don't roll your eyes and start mentioning flat whites.

And don't mention a Flat Black.

Unless you are lucky, tea is generally terrible in the US. They basically give you a cup of warm water and a separate tea bag on the side.

At least in the UK the days of ordering an espresso and being asked ‘do you know it comes in a little cup?’ are long gone!

"Latte" is italian for "milk", so no surprise there. I think you have to ask for a "caffe latte" (essentially a milky coffee).

Nomy,

I stopped my McD's on the way home from work a week or so ago. I probably hadn't been inside for a year or two but my bladder had had it during a long ride. I was shocked to see a display at the "McCafe" counter explaining what the coffees you could order were-latte, americano, etc.

If I order coffee out, I will stick with just plain coffee, preferably for $1. I don't understand how people can pay $5. for a coffee every day.

All this talk about tea and coffee always reminds me of Dave Gorman's "Why Coffee has Ruined Tea" sketch:

Whoever came up with the idea of making "fancy" coffees, giving them faux-Italian names, and charging three times the price for them was clearly a marketing genius.

We asked for two hot teas in McDonalds at the Sand Lake Sunrail station and two cheeseburgers were brought to the table!
