But the schools could be kind and not expect the kids to have to buy replacement stuff like the sports kit or bigger blazers for the 12 or so weeks left til summer break. Considering the finances of some parents may have been affected badly by the situation. (And considering that if cases rise rapidly they may be sent home again)

Exactly this. Yes it is annoying there has been over two months of not wearing them but none of this is the schools fault and the kids would have grown anyway.

I can see it from both sides as many are struggling right now. Not every school has uniform you can get cheaply from supermarkets. My kids infant and junior schools ask for logo cardis and jumpers and older DD has to wear yellow blouses which are all only available from 2 uniform shops that supply the school. High school uniforms are even more expensive. 2 of my 3 needed new shoes which I expected but they definitely got less wear than usual from their previous pairs due to multiple weeks of absence when their classes had to isolate.

But not all schools allow you to buy from a supermarket. We have to buy direct from the school. In September uniform for my twins cost £300!

Our council are offering some vouchers towards school uniform. I also work in a school office and we have had some information about it. I’m not sure if it’s nationwide or just locally. It’s possible parents have heard about these schemes.

Well we paid for our kids uniform which could be expensive at high school but would I ask the school to pay? No

Our school do have a hardship fund which the parents can apply for. It supports those families in need with uniform, coats, shoes etc. However I do think it’s very cheeky of the parent to expect it. I don’t believe that many will have actually grown out of uniform in two months though,DS shoes last all year!
We have done pre-loved sales with our PTFA before but they were unsuccessful, when we offer second hand uniform to families, they always turn it down and want new! |

Maybe these children started back to school in September with last years school uniform. Maybe it already didn’t fit them by Christmas. Fully kitting out several children in September may not have been possible for a lot of families after 6 months of reduced income.
I would like to think most schools would be a lot more caring than to tell these families to “bog off” no matter how “nicely” said. |

We haven’t told families to ‘bog off’.Like i said in the post,we have a hardship fund to support them, and have done so with many families over the last year. However, without resources like a hardship fund, schools wouldn’t have the money to buy uniform, coats, shoes etc for pupils.
