Hi Andrew

We are going to New York on Wednesday and due to visit the Statue of Liberty on Friday, I have a couple of questions that hopefully you can help answer for me.

All the guidbooks etc say that you can not take large backpacks we you on the ferry to the Statue of Libery, Did you take any bag with you and where you able to take drinks and snacks with you. If you can not take drinks and snacks, what is there to eat etc on the island and Ellis island and are they expensive.

Any advice on the visit would be appreciated

By the way your trip reports are great

Hi Andy,

Glad you're enjoying the trip reports

I did take a backpack with me when we took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, it was the one you can see sitting on the seat in this picture -

I think what they probably mean by large backpacks is giant rucksacks like you might go camping with. I think the majority of people getting on the ferry had bags of one sort or another.

I took some bags of crisps and 500ml bottles of coke with me with no problem.

The official website - statuecruises/ferry-s...beverages.aspx

says that you can take your own food with you, just no coolers, so I don't think you'll have a problem at all.

There were snack bars on the ferries selling stuff like crisps hot drinks etc, and there was a cafe on Liberty Island, which had seating outside as well, but we didn't go into it, so I can't tell you how expensive it was or what they sold - sorry.

I didn't notice any places to eat on Ellis Island, but that link I sent you above seems to have a menu for a cafe on Ellis Island, so assume I just didn't see it!

Can't really give you much advice - have you prebooked reserved tickets for a certain time? I think that's the biggest hint - as I mentioned in my trip report, there are 2 queues, a huge one for people with flex tickets and a much much shorter one for people with tickets booked for a certain time.

If you've printed off your tickets you don't need to go to the ticket office in Castle Clinton to redeem them, you can just go straight into the reserve time queue.

Anyhow, I hope that might help, and I'm sure you'll have a great time - I'm jealous

My Wife and I went back in 2000, and stayed down in the financial sector, so you can image there will be a few changes for us.
This will be the first time our daughter (9) has been and to say she is excited is a bit of an understatment (well me too)
