High School Alternative

Hi, I’m just wondering if there is anyone who has any experience/guidance regarding a High School aged child (aged 14) who has left school and chosen an alternate learning route? Not sure if Home Schooling is the appropriate plan for parents with no idea what they are doing(meaning us)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would contact your Local Education Authority as they have a specialist department for Home Educated children. I understand that they will provide a designated tutor who will come and visit the child and parents at home on a regular basis and monitor work. I only became aware of this as although I have recently started to work in the office at a local primary school, one of the year 6 children didn't go to secondary school and is home educated for family reasons (travellers).

One of my daughters school friends did her GCSE’s under the guidance of a local sixth form college from year 9. She left school to go travelling with her family for six months at the end of year 8 and never returned (she lost her place at the school).
I’m not sure it worked out that well - she opted to take a few GCSEs at the end of each year 9, 10 and 11. I think she didn’t do well in the batch she took the first year. To be honest she seemed to spent a lot of the time whilst DD was at school FaceTiming from Starbucks and various shopping centres so not sure that the dedicated time was being put into her studies.

Thanks for you reply. That is my fear, I think you need a very self-motivated child to achieve their potential. I think what I am looking for is an alternative to an actual High School, that isn’t Home Learning, I’m just not sure if it exists?

DH works in a college and they do have students as young as 14. They are called early school transfer students. They do a mainstream vocational course ( such as a BTEC) plus maths and English. He says that usually they are children who have been homeschooled but as they approach GCSE years, they are wanting to ensure they have the opportunity to gain their qualifications. Hope that helps.

Here in Leeds we have the city college. It takes students from 14. We get a letter to give us information about it when we have a child that age - my boys stayed at school and I don't know anyone who's child went. I think they have to continue with maths and English but study a practical course too. Do you have something like that?

ETA It's called the Apprenticeship Academy
