Over dressed or Under dressed?

DS1 was going to a 30th party in a place that hasnt over the years had a great reputation. His girlfriend insisted he dress up, suit, tie etc. This is so not him, he never wears polo shirts/ casual shirts (since he was 18 months old, Oh the battles I had LOL). So I dropped them off, only to get a text 2 mins later saying everyone was in tshirt and jeans, to say he was now too pleased would be an under statement. I did offer to get him stuff and drop it off as its only a few mins away from my house, but he stuck with it, and I did say to him to chill out and take the jacket and tie off, and roll up the sleeves thus giving a more casual vibe LOL.

So juwhat do dibbers prefer being under or over dressed for functions and Im guessing some might have a few funny stories to tell!

Needless to say he isnt going to listen to her ever againxx

Smart casual is mostly how my dh and sons dress, jeans and a shirt for a “do”. Smart jeans probably black or dark blue. No suits they are for weddings and funerals. Xx

Aww, I wouldn't have expected my dh to wear a suit for a 30th birthday unless it was an ultra posh do!
DH does have a tendency to dress up more than I would expect to be fair!

DH’s “smart” wear consists of new jeans and a polo shirt. Suits, ties and formal shirts are for weddings and funerals only (in his opinion!) and even then if there is an after do he loses the jacket and tie and rolls his shirt sleeves up!

Personally I would rather be over dressed than under, which is as well because I usually am in Florida as I can't wear shorts!

No shorts for me either, tankini for frolicking in the pool! Cropped trousers and tops and a couple of dresses are my Florida attire x

I would rather be over dressed than underdressed for sure. Yes, it can feel a bit embarrassing to be over dressed but like you suggested, you can roll up sleeves, loosen a tie, take your hair down etc if you arrive and realise you’ve dressed too smartly. Not much can be done to smarten up if you arrive in casuals!

I think the best advice though is just to wear what you wear with confidence!

Not long after I met my now husband he took me to a party and told me it was fancy dress. I was a quiet, shy wee thing back then and had no money so decided to go as a hippy. Well you have guessed it - on arrival everyone else was dressed up quite smartly. I was mortified as it was the first time meeting most of his friends. Never trust a man on how to dress!

I definitely think over dressed is better than under dressed. Still a 30th birthday party at a casual venue doesn't seem like a suit and tie occasion. But I think it at least required a polo or casual shirt.

Sadly I can't do trousers either, at least not without a long top.
