You can and I have but there are limits on size. Not that mine were scrutinised in detail. Am I correct in thinking powerbanks have to be in carry on luggage only?

Here are the sizes you can take onboard legally.
iata/whatwedo/cargo/...um-battery.pdf 100 watt hours is the limit without prior approval from the airline. As the cell inside a power bank has a nominal voltage of 3.7, then 27000 mah power bank size is the limit i.e. 27000mah x 3.7volts = 99.9 watt hours Please read the attachment, it explains all that is needed. I have to say, 99.9% of the population wouldn't understand this rule, never mind know about it, and I've never known them scrutinise our powerbanks (4*4 holidays a year, plus I fly an extra half dozen times pa on business) on any trip I've been on.
After reading the pdf above, I am none the wiser. Nor have I ever seen or heard them querying a power bank at security with anyone else. If it's obviously massive, they may do it I suppose. Point is I suppose is they have a right to take it off you if it is bigger than the rule, so it is at least good to know, even if I can't remember how big our powerbanks are. As to 'spare lithium batteries must be placed in original packaging or taped over' that's never been enforced either and I always have spare GoPro and camera batteries in the bag. Edit, just looked and mine is 22000 mah which I take, have no idea if this comes within this rule or not. Wife and kids will have similar. Edited at 08:44 AM. |

For the vast majority of people with powerbanks to charge their phones and iPads the simple answer will be "Yes, you are allowed to take them on in your hand luggage".
For a more complicated answer... ^ This. If the powerbank is under 27000mAh then you should be ok. Most powerbanks owned by holidaymakers are below this threshold. If you have a powerbank between around 27000mAh and 43000mAh then you'll need approval from the airline to take it. If it's above 43000mAh then leave it at home and take a smaller powerbank. Having done a quick search on Amazon for "Anker powerbanks" (for example) the highest capacity I could see was 26800mAh. This would be fine to take onboard.
