ive seen sort of bamboo type panels i could fix onto the fence to cover it?
I would probably go for this option, as you know it will work.

Not helpful for you, but we changed the wood cladding around our sun room from red cedar to Grey using Cuprinol Ducks back. It worked really well not at all dappled but took 3 coats.

Not sure if this will be much help but our fences, shed and furniture were all treated with Cuprinol Ducks Back Forest Oak which is a really dark brown colour. Last years I decided I fancied a change so I bought Cuprinol ducks back in Silver Copse (it’s actually more of a blue/battleship grey colour) which is much lighter and it covered the forest oak completely with 2 coats.

We have just moved and the garden had a summer house in it, it was painted green, my daughter wants to turn it into a " chill out shed " and wanted to paint it

of course we are in lockdown, so we looked at what paints we had, we did have some cuprinol shades in light blue and cream, we also had some cream masonry paint ( we painted the front of out house as we put it on the market ) , so had about 5L spare she had given it all a coat of that, it appears to be staying on, of course long term it might not, but i cannot see why it wont

Had my fence originally done in ducksback dark oak. Wife wanted it done in silver corpse. Tried painting over it, but thought it was kinda dark, so I power hosed the original colour of the fence which worked a treat, the painted the silver corpse on in one coat and came out perfect.

Your wife has a rather macabre taste in paint colours
