We got out first ever dog five years ago. I arranged for a dog trainer to come to the house for an hour that day and for another hour the following two weeks.

We learned so much in that first hour and were immediately able to work on some basic commands such as recall and sit. She also talked us through how to approach house training, putting him to bed and starting his socialisation.

I can’t remember when we first took him to the vets, I expect whenever he was due his final shots. Insurance doesn’t cover annual jabs, we pay a monthly amount which covers jabs, flea and working treatments and then a discount off any other vet bills.

My best bit of advice is to try not to let the puppy do anything that you wouldn’t want him to do as a fully grown dog. Decide what house rules you want and stick with them from day 1 (I.e, is puppy going to be allowed on furniture, upstairs etc) even when small you can start practicing how to behave on a lead and to not pull. It’s easier to not let them learn a behaviour than it is to correct it later.

But most of all, have fun and make the most of them being all cute and squishy!

Good breeders will generally insure the pet for one month to give you time to get that sorted , out vet does a puppy pack which usually includes 2nd jag and kennel cough but as Murphy hadn’t had his first jag then it included both first and second for him and we paid for kennel cough extra , puppy check ups and weigh in, worming and flea if needed and puppy party when it’s back up and running and four days puppy day care if we want it to be used by six months and as we have gone to a holistic vet this time it also includes raw feed consult , all this was £50 which I felt was good value ! Our breeder has chosen not to do first jags anymore as vets use different brands and some owners where having to start again when they went to their own vet and pups ending up with too many vaccines ! Pet insurance covers illness not routine vaccines or boosters or any type of prevention, it’s a lot to take on board but you will get there , Murphy is our fourth but first boy and is completely different nature , he is a real wee live wire but so much fun and so much love 💗 you will fall so much in love with your wee spaniel pup the minute you get him 💗🐶💗

Also their are some really good spaniel groups on fb , I’m in cocker spaniels of Scotland and it’s really good for advice , everyone in the same boat xxx
Murphy is adorable, and my wife said to let you know if you want to rehome him we can collect him today

Here was our Murphy when he was a pup. He was a working cocker and the most loveable dog ever. We lost him just before Christmas at a ripe old age.

My tip is would be one person training and make sure anyone else does exactly the same or they get mixed messages.

Wonderful dogs.

My biggest bit of advice for any new spaniel owner is make a point of handling their ears from day one. Spaniels can suffer dreadfully with the stinky spaniel ear. Ive learnt the hard way sadly and spent hundreds of pounds on vet bills having infections treated and sedation as our springer is so fearful of anyone touching his ears. Spaniels are super intelligent and love to have brain games to keep them occupied. Their joints must not be over worked by excessive walking as they grow. Weve found challenging our dogs brain really helps to tire him out. Routine routine routine helps so much. Going out to wee literally vrry very often and telling them to wee. Trying to leave them alone to get them to settle on their own has been a blessing. We took bill in the car on every short trip from the start and hes a dream in a car. Regular bedtime. Bill gets up and wants to go in his crate at 9pm everyday and he sleeps like a log.
Have you gone for a working or show cocker?

He's a stunner. Is he a working or show cocker? Is that brown running through a black coat?
