Jacksonville Area - Things to do / where to stay
We're going to be in the North East for 3/4 days late Aug (2 adults, 12 & 10 year old); where's best to stay, and what should we do? St Augustine Beach better than Jacksonville? Any good places to visit? Thanks!

St Augustine is definitely a better bet than Jax as a base (and I say this as someone with a mate who lives in Jax).
If they like that sort of thing, the Jacksonville Zoo is worth a visit but other than that it is very much a working city than a tourist place albeit one with a very good craft beer trail. There is the fort at St Augustine and a lot of other nice places to look around as well as the beach itself. There are some interesting restaurants around the St Johns River - Clarks Fish Camp up at Julington Creek has some very weird and wonderful food as well as an interesting theme in decoration.

Eat at Clark’s fish camp, some strange menu items to try!

Bit further down the coast is Marineland and Washington Oaks State Park. They are between St Augustine and Palm Coast.
St Augustine definitely more attractive than Jax. Also outlets at St Augustine . If you are driving there, try taking the scenic A1A coast road and stop at Daytona Beach on the way up. The kids might like the old style pier and attractions.

Can recommend St Augustine.
It’s a number of years since our last visit but at that time stayed at Hilton Garden Inn , St Augustine Beach. More than adequate (at the time ) for our needs, just across the road from the st Augustine Beach about 7-8 minutes drive to the Bridge of Lions. Anastasia state park is en route between to two locations near St Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime museum. There’s plenty to see and do, lovely historic place.
