I know you don't get free dining over Christmas but is it true you cant even pay for the dining plan at all?

No, you can still pay for the dining plan. There are some restrictions though. If you book through the UK you have to book a minimum of 5 nights and book tickets at the same time, creating a package.

If booking through the US, I believe you can book it for a shorter stay, but I'm not 100% sure exactly what it is. I have read of people being able to add a dining plan without booking tickets at the same time via the US - it's called a ticketless package. This allows you to buy tickets from agent's other than Disney, or annual passes etc.

If you book your accommodation with DVC points, then you can have it for whatever your length of stay is, and don't need to book tickets. The person who you rent points through has to book it for you and you'll pay the US$ rate.

Thank you, called virgin before and they said that Disney don’t sell the dining plan at all over Christmas and it just didn’t sound right

Nope, they're not right. I've just done a dummy booking on the Disney site to double check and I'm able to add on the dining plan over Christmas

We booked direct with Disney for the beach Club 15 December for 15 nights and bought the dining plan for length of stay. I think with the alcoholic drinks now included for TS and QS it will be a good buy for us.

We bought it for the first part of our split stay starting on Christmas Eve.
We will be 5 nights with ddp and 6 nights in our 2nd Hotel without. With the increase in Disney food and drink prices and the addition of an alcoholic drink paying for the dining plan is starting to look more appealing.

As has been said you can definitely but the package, no problem.

If you buy a package through the US site you'll likely even get it for free. Usually runs up to check in date of the 20th/21st or thereabouts. Once you check in before it finished you'll get for the entire stay. Only issue may be that the max tickets you can buy is 10d, so if you're planning on a longer stay then that might be a problem. You could upgrade to APs but that's not economical unless you plan to go again later within the same calendar year.

The maths just did not work out for us this year, so we ended up getting the room from a US TA, they did say that we can add on the dining package, even if we didn't buy the tickets through them, so that does not seem to be a problem. As Vickie mentioned there may be a minimum stay requirement but we are staying 11n so that did not come into it.
