Granddaughter changed her mind?

DGD is 17, she completed her UCAS form before christmas (all nursing courses 2 x sick children’s, 1 x mental health and 1 x learning difficulties I think) she already has an interview booked... over Christmas she has decided she’d actually prefer primary education...
I’m guessing it’s too late now to change but does anyone have any advice?

No advice, but as a retired nurse, it’s a good decision!

I’m a nurse and her mum and dad (now separated are both nurses) and we all thought for ages that she’d be brill at teaching... she does coaching for cheer and loves it...

Has she received confirmation of her choices.. I believe once that is received you have 14 days to change

As an ex state school teacher I wouldn't be so sure (about either choice).

Op, I would really get her to think about having a year out and trying to get work/ work experience in both areas, as well as some money behind her so she can be sure.

How long ago did she submit her application? If it's within 14 days, she can change her choice of course and universities. If it's within 7 days she can substitute them herself through UCAS, if it's between 7-14 days she will need to phone UCAS to make the changes.

If it's been more than 14 days she cannot change anything. However, if she would be happy studying primary ed at any of the unis she has already applied for, she can phone each one and ask if they will consider her for primary education instead. If they agree, they may ask her to submit a new personal statement to them direct, so it would be good if she has something prepared.

Failing that, UCAS Extra will open in February which will allow her to apply to one university at a time for her new course. To use this, she will need to reject all of her current choices, call each university she is interested in and ask if they have primary education still available in extra. If she uses extra, she can only hold one firm offer and no insurance choice, so she should apply to her favourite university first and only move onto the second favourite if she doesn't get an offer from the first, and so on.

Alternatively, she might consider taking a gap year and doing work experience in both careers in order to help her make a decision which to pursue if she is unsure.

what a sad state of affairs when an experienced nurse and experienced teacher can no longer, hand on heart say go for it!

I'd recommend a term working as a teaching assistant before embarking on a primary education degree. It can be the best job ever, but it's hard.

All is not lost, our daughter changed her mind about her UCAS choices after receiving her offers, she declined them all . She was still able to apply for available courses at Universities through UCAS Extra, there’s a search facility on the UCAS website which shows which courses still have places.

We are in Scotland so available places for Scottish applicants were very limited at Scottish Universities due to the very low fees the University receive for them but there were plenty of places available at English & N Irish Universities.

It’s a very stressful time but it’s better that she realises now rather than after she’s started a course she doesn’t like. I’m keeping my fingers crossed she finds something suitable. Best of luck.

I agree with this wholeheartedly!

It's a really good idea to get some experience in a primary classroom(s) before training.

Volunteering would give her a glimpse into the current realities of teaching and would look good on her C.V.. I'm sure that teachers would give her lots of info if they know she's thinking of joining the profession.

There are moments when it feels like the best job, but there are, also, good reasons so many are fleeing!

P.S. I think most school-leavers would benefit from a gap year of some kind before committing to a degree course and, potentially, a career.
