A question for Virgin experts
Hi all,
So me and DW have just booked our flights with Virgin. Premium miles plus money, but we had to book separately as only had enough miles each to do this. We have got seats next to each other and have phoned Virgin to link the bookings. My question is if we wanted to bid for an upgrade we would have to do this separately so there would be a chance that only one of us would get it. Has anybody had any experience of this? If so what would your advice be? Thanks, Rob |

I think the bid option is very expensive and I don't like the uncertainty of having to wait until a few days before the flight to get an answer to the bid.
I monitor prices instead and see if the gap between classes is closing and then jump in and book the upgrade. It was Midnight in the U.K. When I spotted a cheap upgrade to UC for our Nov flight this week. I was on live chat like a long dog and got it booked.

Thanks Tom. I’m probably being a bit stupid but how do you know how much the upgrade is going to cost and can you do it through the live chat?
Thanks for your help |

Ok, there are a number of variations.
If you pay cash to the left side of your booking you will see how much to upgrade to the next cabin up. Or the next two if in Econ. Miles flights are a bit more work. So you know what you paid and how many Miles were used. Then you keep checking to see if Miles flights get loaded for the next class up and if so just ring up or live chat them. Miles plus money is harder I think. Never done that scenario. I did the live chat and paid for two PE to UC upgrades for Nov that were Miles flights on Weds. Couldn't ring up as I'm out here and the cost would have been horrendous! They have a secure link for credit card details that they send you in the live chat field and you fill in and send back The agent doesn't see your card details. People say you can't upgrade a Miles flight, yes you can I do it all the time. Finally ring the FC team, they are very helpful.

Hi Tom I’ve just spoken with Virgin. They’ve basically said that as we’ve booked using miles (the cash was for the taxes) and we don’t have any miles left to use we cannot upgrade (by paying cash for the upgrade)
Very annoying, does this sound correct? |

If you have no Miles left then sadly yes.
But have you worked out how many Miles are needed for the upgrade? An option is to buy them. Can work out cost effective.

Yes, I agree Mr Tom, I ended up topping up our UC flight miles by buying a few, it was certainly worth it for us.
