There is 8 of us so it will be an extra £480 just for a seat!

It's been like this for a couple of years now, BA also charge for seats Club World is around £70

You have two options, either pay or wait until check in when they become free. If you are a Flying Club member you can request seats free of charge 72 hours before the flight (14 days if you are a Silver Member).

Been that way for a couple of years. Its either a matter or paying or waiting till it opens for free and then hoping there are 8 together or whatever configuration you are happy with. I choose not to pay but then I know for others thats not a choice they would be happy with and prefer the knowledge of being settled.

Yep,

Thomas cook similar at £20/£30 one-way depending where you want to sit.

Thomson seem cheapest at £31 return.

I guess you just have to factor it in to your costs.

I just keep checking the seating plan as I can book for free at 72 hours out with Flying Club. If it's starting to get full then I can make the call whether to pay or not

We flew virgin from Manchester last august.
We didn't book seat but made sure we got to check in early.
We were so lucky to have 4 seats together behind the galley so loads of leg room. I felt quite superior not having paid for these...

BUT

The return journey was a different story.
Arrived at mco really early. First in the queue along with one other family. Virgin ground staff were really rude and seemed put out that we were there waiting.
When we eventually checked in we were told there were no seats together whatsoever. And we weren't even that near either. Not a major problem as my kids are older teenagers but dd has travel sickness and we had major turbulence.
Worst flight I've ever had, not made any better by the off handed manner of the crew. Amenity packs were missing and they just said planes full... attitude was tough!

I suppose what I'm saying is for peace of mind, book your seat.

I really wish airlines would stop doing this and just factor in how many people on average pay for seats and split the cost across tickets. I know it would up ticket prices but it seems more of a bitter pill to swallow when extras start getting added on.

I feel the pain. However they do like as especially do the cruise companies to hide costs behind the basic price. The difference in this case is that you don't have to pay it.
