We were in Venice last week and spoke to a couple from Australia who were spending 3 months touring Italy (half their luck... ).
I told them how we wanted to visit Rome and Pompeii and they recommended the apartment they stayed in. Really nice area and you can walk to anywhere... Itching to book for October 2018 but DH says we need to get the next two holidays out of the way first

We are going to Rome soon and a colleague at work recommended this restaurant - la-prosciutteria-Trastevere. It is a very small restaurant that has plates of different sizes for approx €5,10 or 15 and you fill them with as much bread, meats and cheese, that you can manage. Looking forward to this for one of our lunches.

In Rome we like eating in the Piazza Nervona, Its a large square with restaurants and shops around the perimeter and in the centre you have the artists. It's a really nice atmosphere and we have always had nice meals there.

When we went to Pompeii, we ended up walking back to the entrance to join a guided tour. The site is huge and there is no way we would have found our way around just by using the maps.
Its a fascinating place.

We love Italy and have done Rome and Sorrento separately so had a week in Sorrento all I would say is its beautiful the restaurants are all pretty good especially down the side street's away from the main square although the view is nice to people watch
If you can try and fit in Mount Vesuvius as the views are amazing and worth the climb which took about half hour from the coach park.
We did the Vatican garden tour which was very interesting and then you are free to do the vacation after with no q.
We did a night tour of the colosseum going underneath which was fab.
Again the restaurants are cheeper away from the Vatican and I don't remember being disappointed with any meal tbh have a wonderful time just to add we went in October to both and the weather was lovely each time.
Last year we did Scilly and again was amazing I don't think there would be a bad place to go in Italy lol
