Another Decorating Thread!

So in November we had new windows fitted throughout the house, and every room has to be decorated. The lounge was the first one, but really quick and easy to get done.

We decided to tackle the hall stairs landing next, DH & I have done it ourselves and worked very hard. We both work full time, DH normally works 15 hour days and I do 8.5 hours a day. We have spent our weekends, evenings, and I have used my lunch hours to do a bit of painting etc.

It’s a big space, and was really outdated, boring a dark.

So here are some before during and after photos.

Excuse last photo, I hadn’t hoovered up! Or tidied up lol seeing as we were busy decorating.

During

We really had our work cut out, and didn’t realise just how much work there was!

Now

We are 99% there just need to buy a new carpet, but that will have to wait for a while. It has cost us a small fortune in paint and blood sweat and tears! New door furniture, new sockets and switches new curtains (when they arrive)

I am pleased with the results so far, when it’s 100% finished I will be soooo happy!

Jane 😊

That looks wonderful, amazing how much difference painting the doors and bannister white has made.

I can sympathise with you, re time and effort! We have always had new builds before and it is so easy to redecorate especially as we kept on top of it. However this house is a whole different story. After just doing the bathrooms which were refitted and replastered we decided that it was beyond us and got a decorator in. It took them over 3 weeks so I actually feel justified now! I still oiled all our new doors though!

As for your carpet, again we have just had all new carpets fitted on a very cold week just before Christmas. They all looked great at first but as they settled and warmed up they now all need restretched Company were great and said they had warned my husband about it but he hadn't passed it on So if you can bear it wait for the warmer weather to get your carpets!

Jane. Nice job, well done. So much more pleasurable when you have done a job yourself as you can stand back and think - I did all that.

If I may ask how old is your house? Reason I ask is the coving looks a 1950's design but the skirtings not that old. Also the dado rails are more a 1970's repro pattern.

I'm curious.

It’s an ex council house built in the 1960’s.
Whoever we bought it off must have used the right to buy, and added an extension literally doubling the size of the house. This was the reason we bought it to be honest we liked the space, after having mostly cramped army quarters for 22 years!

We have only kept the dado rails to break the walls up if you know what I mean? As the stairway is so high I think it needed breaking up.
Been one heck of a renovation for us, after the stroke my right side is very weak and has taken probably longer than it should have!

Oh and I never want to paint a spindle again! 😂

Jane 😊

That is something I wouldn't ever have thought about! I only have carpet on my stairs and landing and it could do with changing so there's my excuse to wait another few months

I’m really lucky, DH was a carpet fitter before he joined the army, so that’s a big massive help for us. I’m a bit unsure what to do about the colour of carpet to get if I’m honest because of the dog! She has dirty paws and the carpet down at the moment is hiding that well! 😁

We are moving onto the dining room next 🤞 it’s as easy as the lounge!

Jane 😁
