Washington to Florida - Christmas Road Trip?!

Are we wise... ? !

Found flights from Glasgow to Washington with IcelandAir for cheap and decided to do a couple of nights stopover in Reykjavik before trying to head down to the warmth...

We are thinking of a couple of options as we arrive in Washington on 23rd Dec.

Should we stay in Washington for Christmas? Or drive south to the likes of Virginia Beach for a night before heading to the Carolinas for Christmas?

Has anyone done this before?

We have already done this trip so have seen most of the sites to see in Washington and we stopped at Charleston and Savannah on our last trip.

Because it is December and the weather may be unpredictable, we are wondering also about the train - this is overnight and takes approx. 7 hours. Has anyone experience of this?

I've driven that route about 3 times, twice in November and once in March. One of the November's was a nightmare in parts with snow. The worst part was we thought we'd made it past where the snow was going to be bad and stopped over night in Virginia and when we woke up the next morning turned the tv on and the local news was announcing all schools etc were shut due to snow. When we looked outside there was a white vaguely car shaped lump! We didn't have a choice and had to drive to Atlanta that day and it was nerve wracking to say the least, I couldn't see the edges of the road and the lorries did not slow down at all.

On the March trip we missed snow by one week, there was still massive snow piles turned to ice everywhere but the roads clear.

So it could be great but have plans if the weather does turn bad

I can't say 100% but I think we were in the outskirts of Richmond I know it was a best western but we didn't have it booked, we were just trying to drive as far as we could towards Atlanta when we left New York that morning. This is going back to 2003 so my memory is a little hazy! We did the trip in 2015 twice too, but we broke the journey in North Carolina before hitting Florida.
