Which hire car for a road trip?
Hi all,
We are planning a road trip around New England next summer and there will be at least six days where we will be sightseeing en route to our next hotel. We are a family of four (boys will be 11 and 14) and we will have one or two large holdalls and four flight trolley cases - so not a huge amount of luggage, but we would obv want it out of sight in the car whilst we are making our sight seeing stops. DH is keen to get an SUV, but I'm wondering whether we are better getting a car with a 'proper' boot? What category car would you recommend for this type of trip? (We are definitely using hertz as we can collect the car from our Boston hotel). Many thanks for any thoughts |

We have done 2 actual touring holidays. The first time we had a 7 seater mini van and kept the back row down all the time. There are 4 of us as well. This year we has a standard SUV and had a Ford Edge. We had 4 largish cases plus hand luggage and room was fine with sometimes a couple of pieces of hand luggage under seat when we got out.
There is no parcel shelf in hire SUVs so we bought a black duvet type sheet to spread over the luggage. Also the rear windows are tinted. On balance prefer SUV to mini van,but both were good. I would go with the best value if there is a large difference. I have noticed with Avis that sometimes SUV is cheaper and sometimes more expensive.

An SUV and common sense should be fine. We do this for road trips in the US.
Reverse into parking spaces with something behind that will block the rear being opened where possible. Don't leave valuables / passports etc in the car. Take a sheet or something with some pegs to create a cover if it will make you feel more comfortable. Many SUV's have darkened windows at the back as well to help ith people not being able to see in. |
