My wife and I (both late 40's but young at heart) did Fort Lauderdale for 10 nights Feb/March earlier this year without our 2 teenage daughters.
We visited Miami for a full day on the "Bright Line" train which was easy and good value. The train took around 35 minutes each way. It was good to have visited Miami but we much preferred Fort Lauderdale. Miami seemed brasher and tackier. We chose not to have a car and had no problem using Uber and Lyft. In addition to visiting Miami we did an Everglades tour (excellent boat trip and show, they pick you up from your hotel in an air conditioned mini bus), spent a day on the water taxi (including a couple of hours at Hollywood Beach) and went to Gulfstream Park for the horse racing (free entry, good racing and an excellent venue). We stayed at the Nobleton Hotel. One block back from the beach, far better value than the big beach front hotels and a lovely personal/boutique feel. I would recommend FL over Miami. |

If you can afford it Hotel Lago Mar in Fort Lauderdale is right On a lovely beach in a quiet residential area. We did that when the kids were little, this time when they are teenagers we are going to Miami.
