I may set up Apple Pay on my phone though , my kids are constantly encouraging me to use this as they say it’s a safer option ?
Has contactless payment took off in USA?

Yes it has become far more common now. I still have to sign in a surprisingly large number of places though.

Only take a very little bit of cash for a toll but use a Caxton card with a Clarity Card for any larger purchases. Really don’t need cash out there. Contactless is becoming more common.

Always use cash at table service too - not so much for the worry of card cloning but I'm sure I've read on here that they can place a hold on your card, something to do with the tip. Is that still a thing?

Otherwise will use my card for everything excluding tips for Magical Express, Mousekeeping etc
yes that was definitely a thing in 2019 if you pay by card, we found it happened at universal too, they hold the tip amount on your card then it drops off a few days later, so if you pay the tip on your card too it's like you've paid it twice until it drops off

The hold really only affects people with pre-paid cards as it means that some of your money cannot be spent due to being on hold.

On a credit card you would have to have a very low limit on the card to be affected, so very unlikely most will even know it is happening.

Also much easier to send the kids into Starbucks with a 20 rather than a card, after all if they screw it up it's only 20 bucks gone
We are the same as you
Cash for food & credit card for the Outlets
If we get to the end of the holiday and we have lots of cash I start using it up
I currently have $1400 in cash for our next holiday 🇺🇸🇺🇸

I don’t know why but I only ever use cash when abroad but never use cash in the UK (even pre pandemic). I did get stung on a trip to Sweden once as they are largely cashless society and refused to take cash.

I do use Apple Pay on my watch so hopefully that’s more popular for next year when we go back as much easier.

I take cash and budget an amount each day. I fold each days money into sets. I try to use my credit card very rarely so I dont get a big bill at the end. Any cash I have left over each day is either rolled over or put aside for a treat at the end of the holiday.
