Best opticians to get the thinnest lenses.
Was going to piggyback on the other glasses thread but decided to do my own.
I'm thinking about getting new glasses when I'm back in the uk, my prescription is strong though, -7.5 and -9.0. It's been quite a few years since I got glasses, this pair I got over here (expensive and the lenses not really that thin) Has anyone with bad eyesight like me got any recommendations for which opticians do the best thinness lenses? Also, when you have an eye test will they just give you the prescription?

Just posted on the other glasses thread, my daughter has -7 and -7.25 so always has thinner lenses. We usually pay for the thinnest they do due to fashion frames being so thin. They still do show a bit but not to bad.
Think cost wise they are all very similar, Asda did do a thinner lense as standard if you where over -6 not sure if they still do but ours closed down and she gets her eyes done at specsavers now

I had my eyes lasered about 12 years ago, but I used to have quite a strong prescription, about -6 and -7 I think.
I tended to use independent opticians rather than chain ones. I think your choice of lens material is more important than the optician, I used to have high index glass lenses to minimise the thickness. It has been 12 years though so could be something better now, but it is not a bad place to start. Yes you should be able to retain your prescription and take it elsewhere. |

I'm -10.25 & -10.75 with stigma's and while I no longer use them selectspecs/ do go to 1.74 refraction
My local independent do Kodak and they do a 1.9 though the cost of those makes me wonder about paying upfront for laser surgery! |

You may have to ask for your prescription but they have to give it to you.
I have had Asda glasses before and they do advertise thinner lenses but I don’t know if they are the thinnest. |

DS is 13 and has got a high prescription of -8.5 we've used vision express for his last couple of pairs. when he was younger we used an independent optician but then the cost of thinning for ridiculously high. We've used vision express since.
They do advise us on the type of frames too as that can have a bearing on how thick the lens look.

Asda for me every time. I too am really shortsighted and they provide you with the thinnest lens that they do.
They always advise me to go for a small frame as the lenses are even thinner. I’ve just had 2 new pairs this week, 1 of which is a pair of prescription sunglasses, cost £120 for both. Their premium frames are 2 for £180. They accept a prescription from an other optician also. Specsavers were more than £200 for just one pair and cost extra for thinner lenses. Asda’s customer service is great in my store too and so helpful.

I'm a -15 in both eyes and always have got zeiss high index 1.9 Glass lenses. Most recently from spec savers.
It's about the size of the frame too when buying glasses for poor vision. The least wide lens the better. Plus I tend to get a frame that is more solid to help hide the thickness. I try and go for kids frames if I can but found a great frame in specasavers last xmas that is a good measurement for my lens thickness to help keep it down - hence why I went to spec savers for the first time. Always buy your frames from the same place as the lens and therefore I'm usually led by the frame when choosing an optician Edited at 09:08 PM. |

Watching this thread with interest.
I've no idea what my numbers are but Im blind as a bat and desperately need new glasses. The last ones i got was probably eight years ago and I went with the thinnest lenses I could get, from Boots. They cost about £500! Really interested to know what everyone has experienced, and what is recommended.
