I've done it on the way home and doing on the way out next month. I believe if your with United its really easy as you stay in the C gate area to clear customs and make the connection.

We transferred through IAD last summer - on the United 7.30am from Heathrow which has a fairly tight connection (2 hours from memory). We thought it was fab, about half a dozen people on front of us for immigration so it took about 1/2 hour I think. We had to collect bags, have them scanned then drop them again almost immediately. I don’t remember a long walk to the next gate and we had sufficient time - certainly enough time for me to run back to the old gate to look for my sons iPad 🙄.

And arriving at MCO was ideal, straight out as a domestic passenger so we were on the DME within 1/2 hour of landing. It was so easy that we said we’d actively look for a similar route next time to avoid mco immigration- but I got too tempted by the cheap BA directs this week!

I'm not sure it has still got them as it's a few years since I went, but it had the most bizarre way to get from the gate to terminal. You get in this large moving room on wheels and it rolls across the tarmac.

I remember that when we were bumped from AA to United a few years ago. Ushered into what seemed like a large room only for it to start moving. Bit like the start of a Disney ride.
