Road Trip round New England in the Spring, not the Fall! Day 12 - Cape Cod - Provincetown & Truro

Day 12 – Cape Cod – Provincetown, Truro & Hyannis

I awoke early and saw the sun was coming up over the harbour, so watched for a while before going back to bed! Beautiful.

Will went to get breakfast from the breakfast bar and bought it back to our room. Prepackaged cinnamon rolls – yum! Also coffee and juice.

We set off for Privincetown – quite a long drive along the Cape and we drove straight there with the intention of stopping off places on the way back. I had visited there before on a trip from Boston for the day on an incentive trip I’d achieved through my job. We’d all had Harleys to ride on the back of round the sand dunes, dressed in appropriate biker gear – an unforgettable experience and, sadly, there were no Harleys waiting for us this time! There had been about 40 of them as the guys had answered a radio call to escort about 60 women on rides – so many that all the car alarms were set off from the vibrations they caused! I managed to wangle 2 trips too 😊

We headed straight for the Pilgrim Monument – another tower for Will to climb! This was where the Pilgrims had originally landed on the Mayflower before settling further along the coast at Plymouth. It was sunny and hot but also very windy as it was set up overlooking the town. The higher you got the windier it became! I admitted defeat half way up as I didn’t like the wind at all. I waited in the gift shop area! Will was given an ‘I Made It to the Top!’ sticker for his achievement and took these photos.

We could leave the car in the Monument car park for the day, so walked down into the town. By this time the clouds were clearing and it was getting hot. First place we went in was the shop dedicated to dog paraphernalia, with a small cat section. We bought Pepper another catnip toy 😊 I remembered being amazed at this shop the first time I visited but now have seen quite a few of them!

We had some gelato at Dream of Gelato – good! We walked up and down the street looking at the shops and along the beach, which was just as I remembered it.

The whole place has such a lovely vibe, a bit like Key West. We had lunch in Joe’s Café and did some more exploring, including the big Taffy shop. We both got another pick and mix bag and realised how over-priced Chutters had been previously!

Eventually we walked back up to the car and set off back along Cape Cod to Hyannis, buying another $20 petrol on the way.

We stopped off at Truro and the Highland Lighthouse. We were just in time as it was almost closing.
I opted out of this as I don’t do narrow spiral stairs. Will went up with the guide and a few other people. I waited in the gift shop – a definite pattern here! – with two families with boisterous kids who were to be the final tour of the day.
When Will came down he said I would have hated it, so I was pleased I didn’t go! He took these photos.

We loved the beaches and dunes - not so much the shark warnings. There was a Great White spotted while we were there too!

We stopped off at Chatham on the way home and saw their lighthouse too!

Back to the hotel and got ready to go out again. We thought of going to the Black Cat Tavern but it was heaving with a long wait. Instead we went to Alberto’s Italian – one of the coupon restaurants. The staff were very attentive and the cocktails and meal were gorgeous! Will had a steak and I had vodka chicken pasta – yummy!

We had another walk after dinner but were back in our room by 10pm. We had to be up early in the morning to get the 9am Ferry to Matha’s Vinyard.
